much needed organisation + more concept art!

Image
Dragon Blazers has been moved to a new Gamemaker project where everything is much more organised - the image here is how all the files look now! Plus you can see the next README for Guy when he takes another look at the game (there are some parts of his code that I don't know how to transfer so he'll definitely have to look into sorting that out soon). The README is more in-depth than the last one, detailing things I've done and still have to do, and stuff for him to do as well, as well as an overview of our progress so far. So while there isn't much progress with actually putting things in the game, this is a very important step for making everything easier to manage for our future selves. I've also made some rough drafts for some NPCs that could show up in the first area, which I've shown concept art for before!! They'll definitely look different in the sprites - for one thing, I want them to have much more varied body types than what I've drawn - bu...

Guy wanted me to write about him more

Guy has now read all the previous blog posts and he wants me to mention him more so this is me doing that and then I dont have to do it for a while he's currently trying to make his own dialogue system to replace friendly cosmonaut's one, which I dont really get why but apparently it will make the project easier to work on in the future. since he made all the code he can use it better I suppose. makes sense! two steps forward one step back kind of thing! as much as the dialogue works in the overworld, it's not super applicable to battle. he's tried using obj_camera in the battle room but it wasn't doing what he wanted. I might try to work on it myself tonight actually.. genuinely so grateful that Guy has actual fun working on my stupid little game - ive already said it but dragon blazers could never be real without him. appreciate you Guy!!!! actually if you're reading this uh um you're a LOSERRRR hahahaha ~~~~~~~~~ completely unrelated - I found this super ...

24 HOURS UNTIL DELTARUNE CHAPTER 5!!!!!!!

Image
I think it goes without saying given this blog exists in the first place just how much deltarune means to me. it's been my special interest for 5 YEARS NOW WOW, so safe to say pretty much my whole identity surrounds it lol I was sentimental enough during the undertale 10th anniversary stream on the LentilSoup blog I dont have it in me now, all the feelings are there I just can't put it into words. Dragon Blazers is a love letter to Deltarune in and of itself not as elaborate as piece as last year, but I still like it :] ive of course been very busy with.. well this, so technically ive been drawing deltarune fanart this whole time just in a different form..!

placeholder portrait sprites which will be used with hope and some luck

Image
i'd ideally like the portrait sprites to be illustrated like the battle sprites, but we'd have to figure out how to rescale the images to fit the textbox. if the sprites have to be 64 x 64 pixels, I'll just redo these in pixel art, but id rather not yknow? ,:] [in order: 'neutral', 'unimpressed', 'happy', 'angry'] also remade that awful placeholder 'shocked' sprite before entering a battle, I made it really quick literally while Guy was programming and it was so baddddd like ive said before, all these sprites will probably change later down the line. but even so, this is good practise for figuring out what I want everything to look like, even though these first drafts won't appear in the final game. so I think it's worth it to put in some effort for these now! I think programming is mainly going to happen on weekends, so stay tuned for bigger updates saturday/sunday/monday! in the meantime, I'll keep working on the art sid...

battle START!

Image
HERE are those placeholder battle sprites I mentioned earlier, I had to remake them because krita hated me and crashed :( later today, my brother's going to start putting it all together into the start of a battle system. I've provided him with detailed notes about what I want which should hopefully help out - and if he does find my notes useful, they'll be the new standard for explaining what I want in terms for game features!! update: it's later today!! here's what happens so far: you get within an enemy's detection range, both of you react, and you transition to the battle room!! how cool is that???? this is EXACTLY what I had in mind!!!! so I definitely think my notes for my brother helped to understand what I wanted, this is literally the Vision I had. I will continue to make notes for him from now on! I forgot to make a proper placeholder transition animation whoopsss, we figured something out anyway so now we (Guy) gotta learn how to display text, and m...

fixed following!!

Image
ta daaa! and no more moonwalking! there's still some issues with going around corners, but I think that's mostly due to collisions instead of the following code itself. my brother helpfully added a teleporting function in case the party gets too far, and also says that adding a third party member would be really easy!! that's super useful if I decide that the Guide should actually join the party later in the game   ive also changed the viewport of the game to fit more with the first Zelda game, thought it would be fun and I was right .:] here, I would also show my placeholder sprites for the battle system we hope to implement next, but Krita crashed as I was saving everything soooo .:( (also, the game isn't actually as laggy as if shows - its just that when I make my screen recordings into gifs a lot of quality is lost)

PARTY

Image
we have a party following system!! its pretty good at turning corners, too. there's a couple things left to fix with it (occasionally the follower moonwalks) but im super happy with how its turned out so far who is this "we", you ask?? well, since ive been having to ask my brother who knows more about gamemaker for help constantly, and he's having fun helping, we've agreed to make him the designated programmer for Dragon Blazers! i'll help out and try stuff when i can, but I'll largely focus on story and visuals and sound while he puts it all together with code. in return, i'll be making sprites for his own game project! (i have also been appointed Rubber Duck duty - listening whenever he needs to debug) please go and show him some thanks , its because of him that Dragon Blazers will realistically ever see the light of day ,.:] Aside from that, I've been sketching out some location, enemy and cutscene ideas on paper, and I've jus...

FINALLY DIALOGUE WORKS

Image
originally written 19/6/26 i have genuinely spent all day trying to get this to work. thank you friendly cosmonaut dialogue system, youre not the problem its me. i deleted one line of code by accident and spent hours trying to fix it. but now everything works how i want! guys im really attached to test boy Anyway! It's not easy to tell from the image, but now the player character stops when dialogue starts, and their sprites stop as well, so it's like they're standing still listening to whoever's talking to them. the only thing i want to change is having the character's name more centered in the box but aside from that this is literally exactly what i wanted!! have also just learned how to add custom fonts! i think in the future i might try making my own.. for now im just using the same font im using here, from the Legend of Tenna ,.:] fixed and better thanks to my brother who knows how to use gamemaker

uh oh

Image
originally written 18/6/26 Started learning gamemaker! It's much easier to pick up than Godot in my opinion, could never wrap my head around that. also my brother knows a bit about gamemaker which helps I've also made updated character sprites Haven't made updated ones for the mage yet, focusing on getting it to work. also i fully expect i'll change these again in the future, i just couldn't stand looking at really ugly placeholder sprites during testing ive also been working on dialogue ( select here for the wonderful life-saving resource im using ) but im so tired so some of it isnt working probably because of a tired mistake im really tired morning update: it was a tired mistake. syntaxxxxxx ive got everything working now and i understand every part of this dialogue system that i'll need (there's some features i dont want to use), the only problem is trying to pause the player's animation or set it back to the idle of the...

let's make Dragon Blazers real!!

Image
hi there!!! so, I've gotten a little... carried away with Dragon Blazers, the fictional video game series briefly mentioned in a few points during Deltarune I WANT TO MAKE DRAGON BLAZERS REAL AND IM GOING TO TRY MY BEST TO DO THAT the next couple posts after this are being carried over directly from my neocities page ( select here to visit, im pretty proud of it :] ) since the Dragon Blazers page was starting to laggggg so the dates posted will be inaccurate ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THE SITUATION SO FAR: there's currently two of us working on this Lentil - me! I'm focusing on story, visuals, sound probably, the 'frontend' of a video game, if you will. you can find me on neocities , art fight and y2social  and you can email me at lentilbrain567@gmail.com IJustAmThatGuy, or 'Guy'  - my brother! focusing on the actual code, putting all my ideas together and making it all work. you can find him on neocities , YouTube and art fight I began working on this on 17/6/26, ...
